Onyaanya Constituency   has a population of 20,902 (2011 Population and Housing Census) and the area in extend is 731.9km². Onyaanya has a population density of 28.6. It is one of the highly populated constituencies in the region and is characterized by a number of remote villages and inaccessible roads networks. 

The administrative center for Onyaanya constituency is Onyaanya village. Notable developments at the centre are private small and medium businesses and government facilities such as Onyaanya Clinic, Education Circuit office, NamPost as well as Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare.  It is one of the emerging Settlements in the region.

Economic Activities

Agriculture

Most inhabitants in Onyaanya constituency are subsistence farmers. Mahangu is the principal crop in Onyaanya constituency and most inhabitants in the constituency depend on livestock and Mahangu for survival.

Business

Onyaanya village is the constituency’s business hub. The majority of the businesses include liquor wholesale and outlets, foodstuffs, fuel station, hospitality ventures and informal traders. Most businesses have settled along B1 road forming quite dense concentrations.

Paper making manufacturing

Onankali Mahangu Paper Making Cooperative (OMPMCO) LTD is also within Onyaanya Constituency. It was established in May, 2002 and registered with the Ministry of Trade and Industry as a Close Corporation in April; 2009.The Onankali Mahangu Paper Making Cooperative is a community-based enterprise that provides employment opportunities and income for the group and the community. The cooperative offers a wide range of handmade and finely crafted papers which are made from the stalks and leaves of Mahangu or millet cropped around the North-Central Namibia. Although the project is doing well, there is a need to diversify the products in order to attract the domestic and foreign market. Investment in the form of machinery and modern paper manufacturing plant is essential to improve on the quality of the paper products. There is a craft shop where the items (envelopes, cards etc) are sold.

  • Orchard farming

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry through the Directorate of Forestry has established the Nahas Angula Orchard, Onandhi Orchard and Onamego Orchard located in Onyaanya Constituency. An orchard is an intentional plantation of trees or shrubs that is maintained for food production. Orchards comprise of fruits, vegetables and nut producing trees which are grown for commercial production.

Potential Investment areas

  • Opportunity to utilize abundant natural resources such as grass, Mopane, Ximenia Americana and Marula trees found in the constituency.
  • Opportunity to establish a large production plant for Onankali Mahangu Paper Making Cooperative (OMPMCO) LTD.
  • To further Orchard development production by opening up vast unutilized area for production.

Education: Onyaanya constituency has a total of 29 schools that comprises of 4 junior primary schools, 11 primary schools, 11 combined schools, 1 junior secondary and 2 secondary schools.

Health: There are 3 health facilities within the constituency, 2 clinics and a health centre.
