ONIIPA CONSTITUENCY

Oniipa Constituency is the second populated constituency in Oshikoto region. Oniipa has a population of 24,939 (2011 Population and Housing Census) inhabitants and the area in extend is 371.47 Km2.  Oniipa has a population density of 67.1.

Like any other constituency, Oniipa has some major institutions which made it to be a popular constituency such as, the Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Namibia (ELCIN) which was brought in by missionaries. Another major institution in Oniipa is the Onandjokwe Lutheran hospital which was constructed by the Finnish missionaries in 1908 and it has been serving the nation to date.

Economic Activities

Agriculture

Some inhabitants in rural areas of Oniipa constituency depend on subsistence farming for livelihood. Mahangu being the key crop, the inhabitants also depend on livestock farming for daily consumptions.

Oniipa played a role during the struggle of independence of this country. The first Namibian bishop of ELOC (Evangelical Lutheran Ovambo-Kavango Church) Leonard Auala Leonard played a notable role in the struggle for Namibia's independence is from Oniipa. As mostly known, ELOC printing shop was burnt down by the apartheid regime because it used to disseminate information during the struggle for Namibia’s independence. The popular ELOC printing shop is still operational.

Business

Oniipa constituency has well established business centers in the region. The mushrooming business activities are recorded on the daily basis all over the constituency. Both well established businesses, small and medium business and informal traders are operating along the roadside on the side Oniipa/ Onethindi and Olukonda, making it easy to access their services. The Oniipa/Onethindi business hub is well connected to other regions and towns such as, Ondangwa and Eenhana in Ohangwena Region.
